The Untouchables (1959): In the years following WWI, there was a flood of European immigrants into the USA. In the early 1920s, the 6 Genna brothers, place of origin Sicily, were headed to Chicago. The Genna brothers are nothing but a gang of bullies, and in a few short years they are the ruling lords of Little Italy, an Italian neighborhood in Chicago. One night, as the 6 Gennas are beating up a street vendor, Agent Enrico Rossi whales into them. The leader, Mike Genna, asks if he knows who they are; Rossi says, "Yeah, the Genna brothers-- one rat with 6 heads!" Mike Genna says that Enrico Rossi is Italian, just like them; Rossi says he's ashamed. There are many illegal immigrants in Little Italy, and over 1,300 of them were smuggled in by the Genna brothers, who force them to make booze in small stills in their homes, to supply Capone-- over 1,300 cookers, each making a gallon a day; 40,000 gallons a month; almost half a million gallons a year for Capone. Many's the time that Eliot Ness and Rossi and Lee Hobson have gone through Little Italy, trying to catch the bootleggers-- but of course, they are not interested in nailing the little fish, the illegal immigrants making a gallon of liquor a day, they want to get the goods on the Genna brothers. When they catch one of the illegal immigrants, they want him to talk; but he's scared. Ness meets with the local good guy, Mr. Giovanni, a respectable owner of a grocery store-- he has been in America for a long time, and speaks perfect English. He helps the new immigrants who don't speak English-- he writes letters for them, gets them doctors, and so on. Meantime, the Gennas have a meet with one of Capone's overlords, Frankie Resko. Capone is unhappy with the way things are going, and the Feds making busts in Little Italy. Frankie speaks for Capone, "Every greenhorn you smuggle in is just another place for Ness to hit." Mike Genna plays hardball and says, "We don't tell Capone how to sell his whiskey, he don't tell us how to make it." Despite the warning that "Capone don't like it," the Gennas are at it again-- and while smuggling in 5 new illegal immigrants, the Gennas knife a guard, and one of the immigrants gets shot; it makes headlines. Ness meets with Mr. Giovanni at his store. Giovanni has a beautiful daughter, Stella, who is getting married in 2 weeks. Stella facetiously tells Ness, "It's about time, I'm almost 22. Papa was getting worried," then she adds sarcastically, "so he found me a man." The lucky fella is Emilio, a poor but honest worker-- Stella is not happy with Papa's choice, she thinks Emilio isn't much of man. Stella is attracted to the exciting and lavish lifestyle of the Genna brothers, who are rich and important. One day Emilio is supposed to meet her; instead Stella goes running off into the waiting arms of Angelo Genna (the youngest of the brothers), and they ride off in his fancy sports car. Mr. Giovanni is worried about his daughter getting involved with the gang; he calls Eliot Ness, who meets him at his store. They devise a plan: have the immigrants do a work stoppage. This causes Frankie Resko to put pressure on the Gennas; they find out Giovanni was behind it, and decide to teach him a lesson. They think of shooting his daughter Stella, but Angelo suggests killing her fiance Emilio instead. Right after the wedding, there is a big crowd; Angelo Genna is in an apartment across the street with a high-powered rifle. Angelo fires, but he accidentally hits Stella instead; she dies instantly. Ness and the Untouchables are there, too. Ness catches Angelo fleeing, and arrests him. At the jail, Angelo shows absolutely no remorse for accidentally killing Stella; he denies everything. When bail isn't set, the Gennas kidnap 5 immigrants and hold them hostage-- release Angelo, or else. But the moment Angelo steps outside, he is gunned down. The remaining Genna brothers figure Capone was behind it, and want to settle the score with him, but first they want to rub out Mr. Giovanni. Mike Genna and 2 brothers go to his grocery store, but Ness and his men are waiting. In the shootout, the Gennas get killed. With 4 of the Gennas dead, the 2 remaining brothers were no longer a factor in the underworld. Then Emilio steps forward; he tells Ness that he shot Angelo, and Emilio voluntarily goes with Ness. Mr. Giovanni has now lost both his daughter, and the man who was to be his son-in-law. He is heartbroken. He says, "Stella wanted a man. She had one." (synopsis by: kdh)
