The Untouchables (1959): New York City. Saturday, September 23, 1933. Top rackets boss Milo Sullivan is the head of "Crime, Inc." He has a meet with 5 other crime lords: Augie Epstein (gambling, Miami); Harold Bishman (political power in Louisiana); Ralph Lucci (rumrunner, Detroit Purple Gang); Dino Monteiro (slots, K.C.); and Arte Martin (numbers, prostitution, Seattle). Their profits from Prohibition had been enormous; with Prohibition ending, they were going to put their money to good use, creating the Underworld Bank. For every $1 they lend out, they'll get $2 back; they will provide the funding for hoods, who are preparing men and materials to pull off big jobs. Milo Sullivan says that right now, their $50,000 funding of a million-dollar fur heist will get them $100,000 in return. The Bank's operations are financed and managed on a business basis. In the following weeks, a series of hijackings sweeps the whole country; also shocking is the ruthless murder of a policeman by Duke Mullen. Ness and his men are on the case. Ness correctly figures the source of the funding is in New York, so he and Rico and Cam Allison fly to NYC and meet with John Carvell, U.S. Attorney for that District. With every stoolie in town working overtime, the police round up some suspects who might have done the fur robbery; in the line-up are Duke Mullen, one of the guys that pulled the fur job, and Tony Zagano, who is preparing to pull a job, but hasn't pulled it off yet. Ness questions them both. Ness and Cam openly tail Tony Zagano, a so-called insurance agent who hasn't sold a policy in 4 years, yet had $6,800 cash on him; Rico is assigned to Duke Mullen. One day, 2 hoods pick up Zagano; they put some sunglasses-like blinders on him, and drive him to Milo Sullivan, who has a secret office behind the legit front of The Family music shop. Sullivan's boys have noticed Ness tailing Zagano; Sullivan tells him he's too "hot" to pull his job now-- still, the Bank demands payment on time, job or no. Sullivan gives Zagano 3 days to pay him the $25,000 he owes, or else. Sullivan's niece, Louise O'Hara, runs the music store; she is in her mid-30s. After work, Louise goes to Duke Mullen's place and hugs and kisses him; Louise seems like a nice woman, but she is curiously unconcerned that Mullen was in on the fur robbery. Mullen expects his cut will be $30,000. Rico is outside, keeping tabs on them. Wednesday, October 4 (according to the wall calendar), a desperate Tony Zagano phones Ness (since he doesn't have the money to pay Sullivan), wanting to make a deal. Ness tells him to meet him at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the Egyptian room. (well, there certainly won't be any hoods hanging around there.) But outside Zagano's door, 3 of Sullivan's hoods have been listening to his phone call to Ness; Johnny blasts Zagano. That night, the police fish Zagano's body out of the cold waters of Sheep's Head Bay; he was riddled with .38-caliber holes. A day after the funeral, Johnny the Enforcer tells Zagano's widow she has to come up with the 25 G's to pay the Bank. (that's tacky.) At the prospect of losing her house, she visits Ness. Next day, Sullivan's goons take Duke Mullen to the Bank to give him his share of the fur heist: only $5,000. Mullen protests that he should get more for his part in stealing $1-million worth of furs; they usher him out. Ness arranges a fictitious sale of Mrs. Zagano's house, and gives her $25,000 cash. When she leaves in a cab, as per the Bank's instructions, Ness and his men follow. But a truck blocks Ness' car, and 2 hoods start shooting at them. Ness and men shoot back, killing them. Rico was hit in the left arm! (anytime one of the Untouchables gets injured, that's news.) But good ole Rico has too much moxie to let a bullet stop him, he goes on with his forearm in a cast and his arm in a sling. As for Mrs. Zagano, since she was spotted with Ness, Johnny the Enforcer takes her money and kills her. Meanwhile, at Duke Mullen's place, he's still steaming about being cheated; he tells Louise "nobody shakes me down for 25 grand." Mullen plans to steal $500,000 from the Bank; he figures Milo Sullivan and bookkeeper Davie will be alone tonight, since it's Tuesday. (October 10.) But when Louise goes back to the music shop at 9 p.m., she finds out Sullivan is planning a meet that night; Johnny the Enforcer is there, too, and he catches Louise trying to phone Mullen to warn him. Rico's on a phone across the street; he tells Ness he tailed Louise from Mullen's place to the music shop. He adds, after Louise went inside, "2 of the toughest-lookin' guys you ever saw walked in." Rico suggests they knock over the joint now. Ness and Cam speed over there. Mullen shows up; but when he goes inside, Johnny gets the drop on him. In Sullivan's office, Sullivan has Johnny work Mullen over. When Sullivan takes out a gun and says he'll shoot Mullen himself, Louise goes to the front of the store. Ness and his men show up. Louise presses a secret buzzer to let them inside the private office in back. There's a shootout. A hood is killed. Mullen grabs Sullivan's gun and starts firing; Rico shoots him. Sullivan, Davie and a couple of hoods are captured. Milo Sullivan's ledgers furnished the names, addresses and activities of top criminals. Sullivan and Davie got sent to a Federal Pen. In exchange for her testimony, and at the request of Eliot Ness, no charges were filed against Louise O'Hara. Ness had closed the doors for good on the Underworld Bank. (synopsis by: kdh)
