The Untouchables (1959): New Jersey waterfront, 1933. Johnny Mizo had been marked for death by the South American crime cartel in Brazil where he had fled six years before. Now, he has returned to America to get the $200,000 he had hastily stashed in a hideout before fleeing. With this money Mizo can buy himself out of the death sentence he has received. The Captain tells Mizo he has exactly 11 days, and then the ship sails back to Rio de Janeiro, with or without him. It's a foggy night; a Brazilian sailor gets off the ship before Mizo, and 4 Chicago hoods mistake him for Mizo. They shoot the sailor; a policeman shoots one of the hoods, Paul Santos. Back in Chicago, the 3 remaining hoods report to their boss, top gangster Vince Majesky-- who makes his dough off of protection, prostitution and narcotics. He owns a nightclub called the Silken Trap; his office is upstairs. Majesky is plenty sore about the botched job; he gives Denny Cole one more chance to get Johnny Mizo, or he'll be dumped in the river! Meanwhile, in the nightclub, beautiful Claire Vale is doing a dance number for the customers. Eliot Ness and Lee Hobson are on the case. Ness knows that the slain hitman, Paul Santos, worked for Majesky; and since the sailor had no criminal record, Ness figures Majesky's hitmen were after somebody else. Lee says, "It's still only a theory." Ness quips, with a smile, "That's what they told Einstein."* At the Silken Trap, Majesky tells Claire that when Johnny Mizo comes back to her, she'd better tell him. A few minutes later, Ness talks to Majesky; Ness says 6 years ago Johnny Mizo and his brother Lou embezzled 200 grand of payoff money-- Majesky had Lou rubbed out, but Johnny escaped. Ness couldn't prove Majesky killed Lou, but he'll be watching Majesky-- if he rubs out Johnny he'll get the electric chair for it. Later, in the dressing room, Johnny intrudes on Claire; they were lovers 6 years ago, he wants to pick up where they left off. But Claire hasn't waited 6 years for his return; when Johnny finds out she is Majesky's girl, he slaps her. Claire says, "Johnny, the Spoiler-- breaks his toys, throws them away. But let anyone else try to pick them up..." Johnny asks her about Lou's widow, Dora. Claire says she changed her name to Reynolds, and is living on a small farm near Rockland. He strangles her to death. Then Johnny sets out to find Dora. Johnny drops in on Dora; he also meets her 16-year-old son, his nephew Arnie Mizo. Arnie figures half the money belongs to him and his mom. Johnny stays there for a few days, making sure he's not being tailed. Meanwhile, Ness forces stoolie Garvin to phone in a phony tip to Majesky: he spotted Johnny Mizo at the Green Top cafe, on route 34, 10 miles south. While Majesky and his boys go on a wild goose chase, Rico and a wiretap expert put a bug in Majesky's office at the Silken Trap. 72 hours later this wiretap pays off: Solly Bruckman phones Majesky with a genuine tip as to where Mizo is, in exchange for a grand. Ness and his men set out to intercept Majesky and his boys. Johnny Mizo now only has one day left before the freighter heads back to Brazil-- he makes his move to recover the stashed loot. Johnny and his nephew head to the now-defunct Colton Boiler manufacturing company; Arnie's father Lou used to work there. Johnny pulls up a thin metal sheet, about one yard square, there's a trap door underneath. He pulls out a leather case with 200 grand cash. Just then, Majesky and his boys show up. Johnny gives the loot to Arnie and tells him to stay hidden; Johnny says the hoods will follow him. Johnny tries to get out of the factory, shooting at the hoods. One of them shoots Johnny before Majesky says, "I want him alive!" Ness and his men show up; in the shootout, Majesky and his boys get it. Lee Hobson finds Arnie with the loot. As Johnny lays there dying, Ness says he wants the top names. Johnny, trying to atone for a life of crime (and set a good example for Arnie), tells Ness, " the El Monte brothers in Rio, and Jose Prescott in Sao Paulo." Using that information, Eliot Ness was able to strike a crippling blow to the narcotics suppliers in Brazil. (synopsis by: kdh)
