The Untouchables (1959): Chicago, July 1934. Anonymous phone calls have been tipping off Ness and his men to narcotics activities; they do a bunch of raids. On August 4, even though sales have fallen off, Frank Nitti is ordering 15 kilos of heroin*, the biggest single shipment ever. That night, one of Nitti's boys makes the trade: dough for the H. He gets into a car driven by another of Nitti's boys, Manny Kravitz. But next to him in the back-seat is Maxie, who pumps him full of lead. They dump his body from a speeding car. Next morning, Ness gets another of the regular anonymous tips; on another line, Enrico and an operator are slowly tracing it. (no Caller I.D. back then.) Ness doesn't know it yet, but the call was made from a phone booth by Nick Dolov; he walks to the Windy City Cab Co., which he owns along with his estranged wife, Georgiana Drake (around age 40, she could be attractive but has a harsh facial expression). In Dolov's office, there is a suitcase with the 15 kilos of heroin on his desk; there is also a nervous Manny Kravitz, saying he didn't know they'd kill Nitti's boy. Dolov gives him an extra 5 Gs, and tells him to take a train to Florida, until the heat is off, (as if Nitti would ever let this blow over); he says Maxie will drive him to the train station. But after Manny leaves the office, Dolov tells Maxie to rub him out. In Nitti's office, at the Montmartre club, Nitti's fuming, "Find me Manny!" Just then he gets a visit from Nick Dolov, who returns the shipment of heroin. Dolov then advises Frank that he has too much stuff, and not enough distribution, saying "I wanna show ya how to move it, get more customers, and keep out of Ness' way." Nitti grabs him by the suit lapels and says menacingly, "Don't you give me no Barney Google talk!"** Nick Dolov tells Nitti to pick any section in the city; Nitti picks the 3rd Ward. Dolov promises, "in one week-- 4 times the customers, and no arrests." He gives Nitti 2 tickets to a 6-day bike race, for a meet a week from now. As for what happened to Manny, Dolov says that Manny had double-crossed Nitti and gone to him to make a deal-- and then he rubbed Manny out, because he doesn't want to buck the Organization. (Dolov leaves out the part that the whole double-cross was his idea.) Georgiana was married to Nick Dolov for 12 years, and she wants to reconcile; but he's dumped her for a younger, prettier girl: Marian Keyes (23 years old). Georgiana has Maxie rub out Dolov. August 16, Ness keeps getting the same tips on where Nitti's dope pushers are, but now the voice on the phone is new (it's Maxie). Nitti's plenty sore. The police found a key on the body of Nick Dolov; Ness and Lee Hobson trace it to the apartment of Dolov's kept mistress, nightclub singer Marian Keyes. When Ness tells her Nick Dolov is dead, her only worry is who will take care of her now-- she calls Nick "a louse." Marian still has her job singing at Nitti's Montmartre club; she's also still a junkie-- with her pusher Dolov dead, she goes to Georgiana's apartment for a fix. Georgiana lets her use the drug drawer: inside is a bag of H, latex tubing (to wrap around the arm), a silver spoon, tweezers and a hypodermic needle and syringe. (it's rather surprising that the TV censors of 1961 would allow such a graphic scene of drug paraphernalia, but then this is a very anti-drug episode.) Nitti goes to the arena where the 6-day bike races are being held; Enrico Rossi and Jack Rossman see Georgiana go to Nitti, and they walk away together. Privately, Georgiana tells Nitti her system: she uses her cabs to distribute the dope, and what she did in the 3rd Ward, she'll be able to do all over the country. Nitti says he doesn't want to do business with a dame, but agrees to supply her with dope. October 4, Ness and Lee Hobson have a search warrant and are going through Georgiana's apartment; Marian walks in. She says she's over Nick's death; Ness comments it's only been 3 days. (he died August 16, so it's actually been 7 weeks.) Marian needs a fix real bad; Ness takes her to a detox clinic-- filled with staring, moaning, hysterical and weeping addicts. Georgiana phones Nitti and tells him it's all set. Nitti tells his boys she's "the best businessman I ever met," and they are set up to distribute in 10 cities. Then he tells Marty to get rid of her. Meanwhile, Marian in rehab tells Ness of the entire nationwide operation. Marty goes to Georgiana's apartment, but she winds up killing him. She goes to the restaurant where Nitti is eating and tells him about Marty. Nitti found out it was her tipping off Ness, and tells her "You're dead." But, before she killed Marty, she got him to tell her where the heroin was stashed on 4th street; she has the dope, so she demands to be 50/50 partners with Nitti. He grouses but agrees. Later, when Georgiana finds out Marian talked, she tells Maxie to rub her out. Maxie has killed many men for Georgiana, but now he balks-- he says Marian is "so pretty, she's the kind of girl you want to marry." Georgiana, who already lost her hubby to the younger, prettier Marian, goes ballistic at those words-- she fills Maxie full of lead. Ness and his men raid the warehouse where Georgiana is meeting with half a dozen distributors from all over the country. There's a big shootout; Jack Rossman gets winged in the right arm, but he's O.K. Ness and his men destroyed the entire narcotics web that threatened the whole country. Georgiana got life in prison. As for Frank Nitti, he warned his lieutenants never to do business with a woman.
