The Untouchables (1959): March 2, 1933. The remote section of the northern Michigan Lake front, 180 miles northeast of Chicago. The Chicago Syndicate, to improve the quality of their booze, is now smuggling in master brewers from Germany; the illegal immigrants had come 6,000 miles to the new country. Tonight, 8 new immigrants are brought in. One of them looks at the sign: "Welcome to Chippewa Landing, Michigan"-- Bernd asks, "Chippewa? What does that mean? But this is America, yes?" Max Kerner tells him to move on. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Eliot Ness and his Untouchables are using their armored truck with the V-wedge on the grill to smash through the large metal doors of a brewery; they shut down yet another bootleg operation. March 22. Another raid by Ness and the police. No one is killed since the brewers surrender peacefully, but then one of the mobsters shoots Bernd in the back, fatally wounding him. Lee Hobson and the police chase the hitman, but he gets away. They find out Bernd was the master brewer; he was silenced so he couldn't tell Ness about the immigrant smuggling. But before he dies, Ness kneels over him, and Bernd manages to whisper, "Chippewa... landing..." Nitti tells the Council that any brew meister about to be caught has to be rubbed out, no matter how hard it is to get them to come over here. The brewers are turning their rotgut into decent booze, but they better not tell Ness about the smuggling. Meanwhile, Eliot Ness and his men drive up to the fishing village of Chippewa. Ness drops in on Mrs. Collins (Burt Kerner's widow) who owns a hunting lodge; but during their conversation, her brother-in-law Max Kerner is in the next room with a gun pointed at them, so Mrs. Collins tells Ness nothing. In New York, rackets boss Joe Kulak is hearing the gripes of the speak owners; the Chicago stuff is so much better than theirs, it's hurting their business. Kulak has a way to stop Nitti: he brings in Karl Hansa to be The Monkey Wrench in Nitti's operation. Karl says he knows Max Kerner, and is going to Chicago to end their troubles; for a quarter of a million bucks, he will smash Nitti's smuggling racket, and Nitti will have to go back to peddling rotgut. A new group of immigrants arrives at Chippewa Landing-- but the last one is Karl Hansa, and he stabs Max. At the lodge, the boss Barney Kover has his boys frisk the immigrants; they find a knife on Fritz. Kover grabs him, and asks him why he did it. A bewildered Fritz asks, "Was ist los? Was wollen Sie?" (What is wrong? What do you want?) Kover wants to know what he's saying. Karl Hansa, using the alias Karl Schmidt, offers to act as an interpreter; he says to Fritz, "Ich werde Ihnen helfen." (I will help you.) Fritz is bewildered, and says, "Ich weiß nicht, was jetzt passiert. Was ist los? Ich habe nichts getan." (I don't know what is happening now. What is the matter? I have done nothing.)* And yet Karl lies, saying, "He says he knew Kerner in Germany years ago. And that Kerner killed his father. He could not help himself." Kover tells his boys to rub Fritz out; since poor Fritz doesn't speak a word of English, he'll never know what hit him. Around midnight, March 29, acting on a tip from Madie Collins, Ness and his men intercept a car speeding towards Chicago; the car is loaded with more illegal immigrants. Ness' men shoot at the car; it crashes and explodes. In Chicago, there's another explosion-- Nitti's temper. Nitti gives the order: "There's a leak, Kover, and YOU plug it!" Nitti wants the stoolie. Ironically, Karl Schmidt offers his services to find the leak. Karl Hansa finds out that Madie is the stoolie talking to Ness. Hansa threatens her life; he makes Madie meet with Ness again, but this time she tells him what Hansa wants-- she tells Ness to meet her at the lodge. It's a trap. Hansa steals the immigration records, and kills Kover. Hansa figures with both Kover and Ness out of the way, he can make a lucrative deal with Nitti. But Ness smelled a trap, and came prepared: he brought along a machine gun, and Lee Hobson and Enrico Rossi. In the shootout at the lodge, Hansa and his men are killed. By smashing the alien smuggling racket, Ness crushed Nitti's plan to take over the eastern bootlegging empire.
