The Untouchables (1959): January 1929. Gangster Matt Malloy walks into a sporting goods store; he can't buy an automatic pistol without a police permit, however anyone with $150 can buy a machine-gun. Later, at the Club Montmartre, half a dozen choppers are laid out on Nitti's table. The Council says that now they can move in on the Northside and Bugs Moran. Nitti picks up a chopper and says, "You got 'em-- use 'em!" Gang war! The following weeks are the bloodiest in Chicago history; Nitti's gang strikes again and again with choppers at the Bugs Moran mob. The climax is the St. Valentine's Day massacre, Feb. 14, 1929. An immediate ban on machine-guns goes into effect. Feb. 16, Enrico Rossi and Jack Rossman are confiscating choppers from the sporting goods store; Ness and Lee Hobson, with a search-and-seizure warrant, raid Nitti's Montmartre club. Nitti tells Ness he'll get more choppers; Ness tells him there won't be a single one left in town. Nitti sneers, "A lot of punks have tried to buck the Organization; most of them ended up goin' for a swim wearin' cement overshoes. What size you wear, Ness?" Ness and his men clean out Bugs Moran, too-- but Moran has half a dozen choppers stashed. Some hitmen in a car blast the Montmartre club; (since the Council room is upstairs, it seems this was more a warning than anything else). They throw a brick attached to a note: "How do you like my Valentins, [sic] Nitti?" In the following weeks (that would make it March), Moran takes over 3 of Nitti's joints; and Nitti can't supply the rest because Ness is hitting his breweries. Nitti's got a big shipment of booze coming in, and he grouses to Matt Malloy, "What am I gonna protect it with, water pistols?" One night, Nitti gets a visit from Stanley Zolinsky, his cousin Jon Tobek made an automatic rifle from an old Army Springfield. Nitti tells him to have Tobek make him some choppers. November 12, 1929, (the story seems to have jumped about 8 months), Nitti sets a trap for Moran. Nitti meets with Moran, and offers him half of Capone's $200-million a year empire: beer, booze, numbers, the rackets, girls. To prove he's on the level, he gives Moran the time and date of a 20,000 gallon shipment of alcky. A skeptical Moran says, "If I don't get that convoy..." Nitti says, "You'll get it, Moran-- I promise, you'll get it." Moran takes the bait. On the night of November 22, Nitti delivers a convoy of 20 truckloads* of booze to Moran's warehouse. But one of the last trucks is driven by Enrico Rossi; in the back are Ness and his Untouchables. They raid Bugs Moran and his gang; a federal agent, Wainwright, gets shot. Back at the Montmartre club, Nitti is throwing a party, he has a beautiful dame in his arms; Nitti gets a phone call about the raid (Nitti had tipped Ness), and Nitti kisses the moll. The homemade automatic rifle is confiscated by Ness in a raid, and traced back to Stanley Zolinsky; a week later, the cops fish Stanley out of Lake Michigan. Nitti offers Zolinsky's cousin Jon Tobek $6,000 to make 12 choppers; since Tobek only makes $16.75/week at the mill, that's $871/year-- so 6 grand is like 7 years' salary. And Tobek doesn't have the option to say no. Meanwhile, Bugs Moran is being grilled in Ness' office. Ness puts on some gloves, and takes out a brand new machine-gun. He throws it to Moran, who catches it and throws it back. Ness says, "Your fingerprints are all over it." Moran retorts it's a new gun that's never been shot. Ness fires a dozen rounds into a box filled with cotton. Ness tells Moran, "With your record they'll convict you. If these bullets should get mixed up with the ones they pulled from Wayne Bryant, you'll get the chair." Ness also tells Moran it was Nitti, his "partner," who tipped him. Moran tells Ness all he knows about Nitti getting homemade choppers. Lee Hobson has a wiretap on the Tobeks' place. Lee intercepts a call, and phones Ness. The machine-guns are done, and Matt Malloy has orders to rub out Jon and Eva Tobek. But Malloy is a good guy, he tells them to leave town and keep on running. Just then, Hobson breaks down the door; Malloy wings Hobson in the left shoulder, Hobson fires back and kills Malloy. Lefty and 3 of the boys pull up in a car; outside, Hobson tries to hold them off by himself. Then Ness, Rico and Rossman pull up in their car; in the shootout, the Untouchables make short work of the hoods. Ness confiscates the machine-guns, and once again foils Nitti's plans to win the gang wars with the use of choppers. (synopsis by: kdh) --------------------------------- *[light loads: 20,000 gallons of booze on 20 trucks comes out to 1,000 gallons per truck. Since a gallon weighs around 9 pounds, that is only 9,000 pounds per truck. Why risk a conspicuous 20-truck convoy, when 3-4 trucks could easily deliver the booze?]
