The Untouchables (1959): Chicago, April 16, 1934. Prohibition is over, the main racket is now narcotics. The New York Syndicate, the "Big 6" send their representative Wally Corbin to Chicago, to pick up a shipment of heroin from Louie "The Bear" Madikoff-- he's the top dealer in the Midwest and the chief supplier of the NY Syndicate. Ness has already picked off 2 of Madikoff's runners. Wally picks up 1-1/2 kilos of the junk, worth $200,000. But Wally gets picked off too, he gets gunned down in a shootout with Ness and Lee Hobson and Enrico Rossi. And so Charles "Lucky" Luciano, the big boss in New York, phones Madikoff. Luciano says maybe this deal is too big for Madikoff, and he might have to deal with Mike Pavanos instead. Madikoff says he'll run Pavanos into the lake if he tries to take over; he also suspects Pavanos has been tipping Ness. Madikoff sets up a meet with Ness one night; Ness is riding in Madikoff's car, with Hobson and Rossi following behind in their car. Madikoff blatantly tells Ness that Parkie DeVore is going to be running 3 kilos of H to New York on Thursday; then a school blows up, and Madikoff sarcastically blames "faulty boilers" for the explosion. Madikoff tells Ness to back off, or the next school will blow up in daytime, full of kids. Ness can't prove Madikoff set the explosive, all Ness can do for now is belt him one. Wednesday, April 21.* Ness has been with the superintendent of schools since 7:00 a.m. At 9:45 a.m., Ness is in his office, meeting with Lawton Hollis (the head of the Board of Education), District Attorney Beecher Asbury and Captain Johnson. By 5:30 p.m.,** Ness and his men, with the support of the police, are rounding up all known bombing experts; extra security measures are taken in each of Chicago's 200 schools. On a personal note, Louie Madikoff is pleased that his son Danny is dating a girl regularly; Mr. Madikoff is already talking about a church wedding (and probably thinking of grandkids)-- but he would have a heart attack if he knew Danny was dating Francie Pavanos, the daughter of his arch-rival Mike Pavanos! Later, Louie Madikoff's henchman, Jug Alverson, sees Danny with Francie. When Jug tells Danny that he will tell his father, they scuffle and Danny winds up shooting Jug. Ness and his men go to Danny's place; Danny is the one who was tipping Ness, and now Ness tells Danny that Louie Madikoff is threatening to blow up a school. Danny doesn't believe Ness, but when Danny gets to his father's house, there is Artie Krebs a.k.a. the Firecracker, torchman for Detroit's notorious Purple Gang. When Louie Madikoff finds out Jug was shot, he figures Mike Pavanos was behind it; Louie tells Krebs he's got another job-- Madikoff fingers Pavanos, for another 5 grand. Thursday morning, 5:10 a.m., Parkie gets on a plane to New York. Artie Krebs, driving a speeding car, machine-guns at Mike Pavanos, but accidentally hits his daughter Francie instead. When Danny Madikoff shows up, and sees Francie dead, Danny wants revenge on his father; Ness talks him into doing it the legal way. Danny calls his father and tells him Ness knows about the Firecracker-- they'll arrest Krebs and then go after him. Louie Madikoff drives after Krebs, and stops him just before he plants the nitro at the school. Ness and his men surround Madikoff and Krebs; Rossi shoots Krebs, and Danny shoots his father to protect Ness after Louie draws on him. Since Danny cooperated with the feds, Ness got him a short sentence at Joliet where his only visitor was Mike Pavanos. And the mob learned its lesson: they never threatened to endanger the children of Chicago again. (synopsis by: kdh)
