The Untouchables (1959): November 7, 1933. Slot machines are big business; 2,000 of the one-armed bandits rake in $100,000 per week; ($50 per machine). One night, "Moose" Tobin and 3 other hoods belonging to slot machine czar Joe Bowmar drop in on Porker Davis' upstairs gambling joint. Tobin tells Davis that Bowmar wants to teach him a lesson; the hoods chase everybody out of the joint. Then they start throwing the slot machines out the 2nd story window; when one of Davis' employees tries to stop them, the hoods throw him out the window too. Ness and his men are on the case. 2 years ago, Ness had run the slot machines, then run by Augie Viale, out of Chicago; now the slots are back. Joe Bowmar, former kingpin in Capone's booze operation, now the czar of the multi-million dollar slot machine racket, calls Davis in for a meet. Bowmar gives him a "take it or leave it" offer: from now on, Bowmar is his 50/50 partner. Bowmar also warns Davis: the machines take 30%; don't rig the machines so they take 50% or more, or the customers will stop playing. Bowmar will supply 40 of his slot machines to Davis' place. Davis is surprised to find his old acquaintance Benji Liemer is now working for Bowmar. That night, Davis' place is back in business. A week later, Benji collects Bowmar's take from Davis; his machines did well-- too well. 40 machines should bring in $2,000 but they took in almost $3,000; ($75 per machine). The machines have been rigged with lead weights (the same kind mechanics use to balance car tires). When Davis steps out of his office, Benji plants a bag of lead weights in his desk. Later, Benji tells Bowmar about the weights. That night, Davis gets a visit from Bowmar, "Moose" Tobin and 3 of the boys; they find weights in the machines and Davis' desk. They leave Tobin alone with Davis in his office; Tobin, a big (6'6"), muscular guy, is about to rough up Davis. But then, Davis takes a gun and shoots him. Davis disappears fast. Ness is looking for Davis, wanted for Tobin's murder. Ness sees Bowmar, and later Benji; both say they don't know where Davis is. But Benji is lying; he's agreed to meet Davis, at Benji's mother's apartment (she's away visiting family in St. Louis). Davis gives Benji 5-grand, and begs Benji to fix things with Bowmar. Now we find out why Benji hates both Davis and his boss Bowmar-- Benji used to have his own nightclub, but Davis and Bowmar each harassed Benji to buy his booze exclusively from him; Benji got run out of the business. Benji was the Man in the Middle-- and now he's getting his revenge. November 16. Benji phones Bowmar and tells him where Davis is staying. Bowmar's 3 hoods (the ones that used to work with Tobin) go to Davis, and fill him full of lead, and dump his body in the lake. (one down, now Benji has to get his revenge on Bowmar.) Lee Hobson gets an anonymous phone tip about a secret slot machine joint owned by Bowmar; Ness and his men raid it. In the next 2 weeks, the tips and the raids continue: 9 of Bowmar's joints get hit. Ness drops in on Julie Liemer, and tells her he knows Benji is involved with slot machines. Later, Julie goes to Bowmar, asking for a job as a singer in one of his nightclubs. When Bowmar won't offer her a job, Julie stupidly says, "I could've blabbed to Ness-- he knows about the slot machines." (as if that proves her loyalty.) All it does is let Bowmar figure out that her husband is the one who's been tipping Ness. Now Ness and Bowmar are both looking for tipster Benji. Ness hauls Julie to his office; she gets a call from Benji. Ness lets Julie go, and Ness and his men tail her-- she goes to Bowmar's Hotsy Totsy Club. She stupidly talks to Bowmar again, and begs him to spare Benji's life. But all she does is lead Bowmar and his 3 hoods right to Benji, because they tail her. Outside the apartment building, they grab Julie. In Benji's 3rd floor apartment, they shoot Benji. Ness and Rico and Lee Hobson burst in; the 3 hoods surrender, but Ness and Bowmar struggle in the hallway. Bowmar does a swan dive off the 3rd floor railing. Winchell: "Joe Bowmar's death ended the large scale operation of slot machines in Chicago. He went to his grave in high gangster style: in a casket that cost over $2,000. Benji Liemer topped him: his casket cost $2,500." (synopsis by: kdh)
