The Untouchables (1959): New York City. July 23, 1934. The Underworld, which had long made big money by covering bets on horse races, wants to get their hands on a new invention-- the racewire, which can speed the results of horse races to bookmakers everywhere. That rainy night, Michael Barrigan and Frederic Withers (who, along with their partner Douglas Barrows, own and run the Trans-Pacific News Service) receive an urgent call from Barrows-- but Barrigan finds Barrows dead in a bookie joint (the back room of Hayes florists) when he gets there. Joker takes Barrigan to Joe Kulak's car; they all take a short ride. Kulak makes it simple: he wants Barrigan's racewire. Barrigan has until tomorrow at midnight. 3 hours later, Barrigan goes to his office; the names Barrigan, Withers and Barrows are on the door, but the bottom name has been ominously crossed out. Barrigan notices someone is inside, and he pulls out his gun; but the surprise intruder is Eliot Ness-- who already knows about Barrows' murder, and that the Syndicate wants Barrigan's racewire. Barrigan's racewire is legit, though he and Ness both know bookies want it for illegal gambling. Barrigan has given Ness info in the past; now Barrigan tells him Kulak is behind it-- his operation is coast-to-coast with headquarters in Frisco. Ness tells him that if he cooperates with Kulak, then in 3-4 weeks when Kulak doesn't need him anymore, he's dead. Barrigan says if he doesn't cooperate, he'll be dead by midnight. On Ness' way out, he runs into Joker, who asks Ness if he's in the bookmaking racket now; Joker quips, "That'd make quite an item for Winchell."* Next day, crime overlord Gregory Pindar, who has spent the last 7 years in Singapore dealing in drugs, arrives in San Francisco. Back in New York, Barrigan had turned down Joker's $25,000 -- at 9 p.m., Barrigan's other partner Frederic Withers is rubbed out. A worried Barrigan phones Ness; but by the time Ness and the cops get there 30 minutes later, Barrigan's office is a shambles-- and Barrigan's body is nowhere to be found. District Attorney Beecher Asbury decides to send Eliot undercover to San Francisco, to infiltrate Pindar's operation; Pindar has been out of the country for years, and his hoods in San Fran won't recognize Eliot. And so Eliot, using the alias Frederic "Whitey" Steele, shows up in San Francisco. SF police Captain John Stanwood arranges for Whitey to be in a police line-up with Griff Darden, one of Pindar's top boys. (in a funny scene, when hooker Louise has to step forward, Darden really checks her out from behind.) Darden figures he can use a sharp operator like Whitey; Darden's pal Frankie Brandon is a bit suspicious of Whitey, though. One night, Frankie tails Whitey, and finds him talking to Captain Stanwood at a pier; Frankie shoots, and Whitey shoots back, injuring him. They arrest Frankie. Next day, Whitey goes to Pindar's office. Whitey says he killed Frankie, adding, "don't send your cheap punks after me." Pindar hires Whitey to fill the new job vacancy. Then Barrigan shows up. (Joker didn't kill him after all!) But Barrigan doesn't blow Ness' cover; in fact, Pindar assigns Barrigan to show Whitey the whole operation. (Barrigan, it seems, can't decide if he's a hood, or working with Ness.) Whitey spends 10 days working for the operation, it seems to be just about publishing horse racing results. On September 12, Whitey discovers a sheet that's been wrapped in heroin; he also finds out the "special edition" of the scratch sheets for the Narragansett races contain secret codes for heroin deliveries. He tells Capt. Stanwood. Pindar calls a big meet of about a dozen major narcotics dealers from all over the country. But when Joker goes into Pindar's office, he immediately recognizes Whitey as Eliot Ness; Joker pulls out his gun. However, a couple of dozen cops are already surrounding the place, and Ness says they've confiscated the heroin in Pindar's secret safe. Joker shoots Pindar. The cops arrest everybody. Joker tries to escape, by holding a gun to Ness' head and using Ness as a shield. Barrigan pleads with Capt. Stanwood to let him save Ness' life; the Captain gives him a gun. Barrigan walks forward and points the gun at Joker. When Joker tries to shoot Barrigan, Ness fights Joker for his gun. A cop blasts Joker with a chopper. Barrigan's gun was empty, it was a bluff. Did Barrigan save Ness' life because he's his friend? Or to have the courts go easy on him? Eliot Ness had smashed the giant narcotics ring. Barrigan was convicted, but based on Ness' recommendation for leniency, he was paroled after 18 months. However, for Eliot Ness, the true nature of Barrigan's character was to remain an unsolved mystery. (synopsis by: kdh) --------------------------------- *[inside joke: Walter Winchell, narrator for "The Untouchables," had a popular daily newspaper column, and a weekly radio news program in the 1930s.]
