The Untouchables (1959): 1932. Chicago is a thirsty town, consuming 86,000 gallons of booze a day; that's 32-million gallons a year. Almost all this booze is beer and rotgut, but 1% is the finest Canadian scotch. Nitti's boys, armed with tommy guns, shoot up a rival speak, the Blue Lion, that's serving the Canadian scotch. Ness and his men investigate; 2 people dead, 3 critically injured. Nitti's plenty sore; there are half a dozen clubs, roadhouses just outside of Cook County, serving Canadian scotch. Where are they getting it? Just then, a bomb goes off in the Montmartre Club; Nitti and his boys are unhurt, but 6 pedestrians and a taxi driver are injured. Nitti orders in 100 hitmen from Detroit. It's a Gang War! To prevent further killings, Ness arrests Nitti and confiscates his gun. Although Nitti is sprung within the hour, Ness blackmails him: Ness tells Nitti, if one more person is killed in the gang war, "Lee Hobson's gonna put a bullet in me with your gun." (In the arm or leg, I suppose. This is one of several times that Ness resorts to using a dirty trick.) Attempted murder of a federal agent would mean a life sentence for Nitti-- he brims with righteous indignation. (Ironic how fast crooked hoods protest at someone else using a dirty tactic.) Nitti says to the desk sergeant, "You heard him." The desk sergeant just says, "What gun?" The Enforcer gets the message, and sends the hitmen back to Detroit. Nitti has his boys bring in a bloodied Grayson, the manager of the Blue Lion roadhouse; Nitti says that Grayson has been "in conference" with the boys. Nitti demands to know who set him up in business, and Grayson says, "Surigao." Council member Urcel informs Nitti that Surigao used to run the opium trade in Hong Kong. Nitti says, "Surigao? What kind of a country we runnin' here? Everytime you turn around, some lousy foreigner's trying to muscle in." Nitti gets on the blower and sets up a meet with Surigao. Early that night, Surigao watches as a plane carrying his Canadian scotch crashes in a field; he doesn't know that the injured pilot, Rusty Miller, manages to escape-- he assumes Rusty is dead. At 11:00 p.m., Nitti meets with Surigao, but Surigao won't share the Canadian imports; Nitti tells him it's dangerous to buck the organization. While driving back to town, Nitti and his boys happen to meet Ness on the road; he is investigating the plane crash. Nitti's boys search the area and capture the pilot. Meanwhile, Capt. Brownlee is telling Ness that a small group of pilots working for Johnny Prebble are former WWI aces, and now they're in the smuggling racket. Ness quips, "Probably beats meeting Baron von Richthofen at dawn." Next morning at the Montmartre Club, we can see from Rusty Miller's bloodied face that he has been "in conference" with Nitti's boys. Nitti gets on the blower and tells Prebble to give him the location of Surigao's warehouse, or Miller's dead. Prebble tells him where it is, and that 5,000 cases are inside. Then Prebble and his other pilot, Tony Masters, go to Ness. Eliot tells them to fly the planes tonight, as usual, so Surigao won't be expecting a raid. But Surigao is expecting a raid: from Nitti. That night, Prebble and Masters find out that Ness will be going into a trap. Nitti and his boys drive to the warehouse, but Ness and his men have set up a roadblock, and send him back. At the warehouse, after Masters' plane is unloaded, he takes off again. Then he buzzes the car with Ness and Lee Hobson and Rossi, as a warning. Ness and his men get out of their car, and see a scarecrow in a farm field. Surigao and his boys are ready to blast Nitti's car when it arrives. Eerily, a car slowly coasts downhill to the warehouse. Surigao's boys blast it with several hundred machine gun rounds. The "driver" is a scarecrow. With the element of surprise on their side, Ness and his men have the drop on the gang. There is a major shootout, with tommy guns and shotguns. The warehouse, loaded with 5,000 cases of flammable liquids, blows up in flames, killing Surigao who had hid inside in order to be out of the line of fire in the gun battle. That ended the flying import of Canadian scotch and the threat to the Capone empire was reduced to Ness and his Untouchables. (synopsis by: kdh)
