The Untouchables (1959): Chicago, April 25, 1932. With Capone in prison doing his rap for income tax evasion, his 8 lieutenants are running things; their HQ is the Montmartre Club, in Cicero, 4 miles west of Chicago. Capone's booze trucks are being hijacked, his speaks are tommy-gunned; Capone's breweries are being smashed, and not just by Eliot Ness, but by rival gangs. Right now, the 8 overlords running the Syndicate are deadlocked over how to run things-- on one side are Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti, Brenner, Urcel and another lieutenant; on the other are Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik, Levinsky, Grecko and another lieutenant. A gang war is raging. Nitti's plenty sore. He slams his fist on the table and growls, "6 breweries in 2 weeks, at 100 grand each!" Guzik says he's not worried; booze is going out because Prohibition will be repealed soon. Nitti says at $60-million a year, booze is in. Guzik says that they should increase their narcotics racket: no breweries, no warehouses, no trucks-- only small packets of junk. Nitti wants to blast the rival gangs, but the vote of the council is a 4-4 deadlock, so no action. Secretly, Nitti fingers Levinsky; he gets a shiv in the back and a trip to the morgue. But at the next council meet, Nitti finds out Brenner has been rubbed out. So the 6 overlords are now hopelessly deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. Al Capone, through his liaison Archibald Devlin, gives Nitti and Guzik the word: Kafka, Capone's old-time mentor, now an overlord in the Oriental narcotics racket, is being smuggled into the country to be The Seventh Vote. And so, Nitti and Guzik call for a meet with Alexander Stavro at his Club Istanbul-- he's to arrange Kafka's importation on the last leg of his journey, from Vancouver to Chicago. Host Stavro asks them if they'd like some Slivovitz (plum brandy). Nitti says, "Slivovitz? Are you kiddin'? Whiskey." But Nitti tries some, and it ain't bad. They agree on a price for Stavro's services: 50 grand. To seal the deal, Nitti has another glass of Slivovitz; when Guzik won't drink with them, Nitti quips, "Dat bum's got no manners." As Guzik leaves Club Istanbul, a sniper with a high-powered rifle, on the rooftop across the street, fires 3 shots at him; Guzik falls, but the sniper misses. Guzik tells Nitti, "Now you better start looking over your shoulder." June 4. Ness and his men wiretap the Club Istanbul. They get a tip that leads them to the Canadian border station. Stavro is on a train to Chicago, doing a trial run. When Ness conspicuously gets on board, Stavro has his boy shoot a man in the coffin in the baggage room (that was how he planned to smuggle Kafka in). The shooting makes the Chicago headlines. Nitti's plenty sore. He and Guzik meet with Stavro, who has his boy stand guard with a tommy gun. Stavro now wants 1/4 of a million to bring in Kafka. Nitti says, "If your price goes up again-- you're dead!" Then he adds, "And that goes for your punk with the chopper, too." Complicating matters, of course, is the fact that Eliot Ness and his Untouchables will be guarding the Canadian border like never before. How can Stavro sneak Kafka across the border, in plain view? There is a travelling circus; disguised as a clown is Kafka. He jumps in a car, and they speed away. Ness and his men give chase; Ness shoots the driver of the getaway car, which crashes and blows up in flames. Nitti and Guzik had flown to a nearby town, waiting to pick up Kafka and grousing at each other in their hotel room. Instead, Eliot Ness shows up and makes the announcement: the tie-breaker arrived D.O.A. Stavro was arrested later while having a champagne dinner in Cleveland. As for the tie in the council, that was solved in July, when Jake Guzik was sent to prison (he did a few years for income tax evasion), leaving Nitti in control of the Syndicate. (synopsis by: kdh)
