The Untouchables (1959): Autumn 1934. An armored truck, loaded with the special paper used in printing U.S. currency, is headed for the Bureau of Engraving in Washington, D.C. The truck is hijacked, and the 3 armed guards are tommy-gunned. Since counterfeiting will be on a national level, it's a federal offense, and so Eliot Ness and 5 other federal agents from around the country convene in Washington, D.C., and are briefed on the situation. When Ness gets back to Chicago, the Untouchables go through a large list of forgers. They determine that the top man is Hans Dreiser, doing 20-to-life in Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. One night, there's an explosion in the high-voltage power transformer next to Leavenworth Prison. During the brief power blackout, Dreiser escapes over the 20-foot-high wall with a rope; 2 of Mr. Moon's men are in a waiting car. Next day, Ness is in Leavenworth County, and talking to the Power Company managers. Benny Joplin had been the inspector for the transformer, it turns out he's an ex-con from San Quentin Prison in California; Ness has him followed. Joplin heads back to Oakland. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Hans Dreiser is taken to Chow Lee's antique shop in Chinatown; in a back room, Dreiser has a meet with Mr. Moon and his bulgy-eyed henchman Paddy. Mr. Moon explains to Dreiser, "Paddy has a peculiar weakness, he has no moral judgment. If I were to tell him to kill you, he would do so without conscience." Creepy Paddy says, "You just tell me, Mr. Moon." Hans Dreiser seems oblivious to how dangerous these characters are, he is too busy being impressed that his tea is served in a Ming Dynasty cup. Even though Dreiser will be printing up $100-million in counterfeit bills, his accommodations will be a modest basement studio; but Dreiser is a lover of the fine arts-- Hans Dreiser gives a little squeal of delight when he is told the bed he will be sleeping in had once been slept in by the Emperor Franz Joseph. While Hans is working on the engravings, he listens to classical music incessantly, playing LPs on a record player. When Mr. Moon drops in occasionally, he appreciates good music too, and recognizes Beethoven's 3rd symphony; but Monk, the uneducated mug who has to guard Hans all day long, is being driven nuts by the music, which he refers to as "junk." Ness goes to Benny Joplin's home and talks to Mrs. Joplin. With Ness on his trail, Benny goes straight to Mr. Moon, and asks for money to skip the country. Mr. Moon gives him 10 grand; as soon as Joplin leaves, Mr. Moon tells the creepy Paddy, "Kill him-- and bring back the money." On October 4, Ness is at the morgue-- Joplin's body, with 3 bullet-holes in him, had been fished out of San Francisco Bay. Ness pays Mr. Moon a visit. On hearing he's suspected of murder, Mr. Moon plays innocent, saying he's a legitimate businessman; Ness says he knows he's involved in fan tan parlors and girls. Mr. Moon has a meet with Nitti and his 6 lieutenants at the Montmartre Club; Moon shows them some sample counterfeit bills. Nitti says, "Print by Dreiser on paper by Uncle Sam-- that's pretty hard to beat." Then Nitti snaps, "Why don't some of you boys come up with ideas like this?" Mr. Moon will delivery the money, the Syndicate will circulate it; they'll split $100-million, 50-50. But Mr. Moon needs half a million bucks front money, real money, and Nitti pays. Back in San Francisco, due to Ness' visit, Hans Dreiser is in an apartment above one of Mr. Moon's fan tan parlors; he's been cooped up for over a week with Monk. And Hans plays his classical music records incessantly. Monk, exasperated by listening to "that lousy music," smashes his records and the record player, and goes out for a drink. Hans sees a newspaper ad: San Francisco Opera, tonight only, Bizet's Carmen. Admission prices are $1.50 and up, it's $6.00 for a box seat. He only has 3 bucks on him, but gets the last box seat by paying for it with one of the counterfeit $100 bills. After the performance, Mr. Moon finds out and kills Hans. Paddy dumps the body. But Ness and his men have already found out about the counterfeit $100 at the opera house, and are closing in on Mr. Moon and Paddy. Mr. Moon says, "Run, Paddy, run-- save yourself." Of course, Moon knows if Paddy runs, the feds will go after him, which they do. Moon goes inside his antique shop, through the back door, and locks the door. When he hears the gunshots, Lee Hobson and Rossi shooting it out with Paddy, Moon smiles. But Ness breaks in through the front, and finds Mr. Moon in the basement. Mr. Moon dies in the shootout with Ness, amid an explosion of fireworks (Mr. Moon had kept crates of fireworks down there for the Chinese New Year). There's an old Chinese saying, "If you live in Chinatown long enough, eventually everything will happen to you." Mr. Moon, who had lived such a spectacular life, died proving the truth of that observation. (synopsis by: kdh)
