The Untouchables (1959): Summer 1931, Chicago. Eliot Ness and his Untouchables had smashed most of the big breweries owned by the mobsters. But racketeers, taking advantage of the poverty and desperation of many immigrants, forced them to make a gallon of whiskey a day in small stills in their homes-- makeshift stills which could be put together for less than $3. The absolute boss of Little Italy is Augie "The Banker" Ciamino, and with whiskey pouring out of 1,000 tenement stills, he was cancelling the gains that Ness had made. August 16, 1931. That night, at a street festival, Giovanni gets a hold of some bad whiskey at Raineri's bakery, and is sped to a hospital in an ambulance. Ciamino wants to find out who is responsible; he says to Raineri, "You tell me where Giovanni got the bad stuff, I buy all your sfogliatelle."* Uncooperative Raineri says, "I don't make sfogliatelle." (even though we see a sign in his bakery: Special Today: Sfogliatelle.) When Ciamino finds out it was Stefano-- and twice he'd warned him about cooking the whiskey wrong-- he has him poisoned by making him drink a large amount of his own bad hooch. (it probably was contaminated with wood alcohol.) Ness and his men are on the case. Ness looks at Stefano's home still; 1,000 like it turn out 30,000 gallons of whiskey a month. Some of the immigrants, like Lorenzo Raineri and Luigi Falconi, go to night school to learn English. One night, Eliot Ness drops in on Mr. Lee's classroom and addresses the class; he wants to get Ciamino and bust his still operation. Ness writes his office phone number on the blackboard: STate-1096. But as soon as Ness leaves, 2 of Ciamino's goons drop in: Picolo, a small, sleazy guy who always wears shades, even at night, and big, heavyset Richie. While Picolo holds Mr. Lee, Richie bashes him in the face with a chain. Only Lorenzo Raineri gets the hoods to stop; Richie would have smashed him, too, but Picolo says, "No, that's Paul Raineri's old man." (Paul is Ciamino's bookkeeper.) Later, Raineri tries to talk his son into quitting his bookkeeping job for Ciamino. Ness' men keep tabs on a family that has a still; they notice them taking apparently empty root beer bottles to Falconi's grocery store. But the bottles are really full of whiskey; though the bottles seem empty because they don't have a cap, they really have a paraffin seal inside. August 23, Ness visits Falconi around closing time, 5:00 p.m., and gets him to admit his store is a pickup point for Ciamino's whiskey operation. Falconi says they'll pick it up 2 hours later. But on his way to night school, Falconi drops in on Raineri, and tells him what a proud thing he did, working with Ness. Paul is in the next room, and overhears. (apparently, Paul tells Ciamino about it; Ciamino promises he will only "scare" Falconi.) But then, Ciamino and his goons go to Falconi, and force a bottle of Stefano's bad whiskey down his throat; Falconi goes blind. Later, Ness and his men follow a bottling truck, after it makes its pickup from Falconi's store. Next day, Ness and his men raid Ciamino's root beer place. They find no books (they are at Paul's home), but Lee Hobson finds a receipt for 800 pounds of paraffin. Beside a 10,000-gallon wooden vat of root beer, Ness finds a hole that had recently been chopped in the floor; Ciamino had dumped the whiskey. When Ciamino makes fun of Ness, and tells him to wash his hands in root beer, Ness takes an axe and chops a hole in the huge vat, spilling thousands of gallons of root beer. Ciamino denies using paraffin; Ness takes an empty bottle, breaks it, and ominously holds the broken glass to Ciamino's face. But then Ness just shows him the paraffin plug inside. Lorenzo Raineri is shocked when he looks at his son's bookkeeping; he shouts, "The whiskey! The pay-offs! The whole dirty story-- that's what he keeps!" Raineri phones Ciamino's bottling company; Picolo answers, and Raineri asks to talk to Paul. (Raineri isn't too bright-- he knows the others are right there, but figures they can't overhear the conversation.) Raineri tells Paul that Falconi is blind; he's got the books, with the entire story of Ciamino and the whiskey, and he's going to turn them over to Ness. Ciamino is standing right next to Paul, listening in. Paul, even though he knows it's suicide, warns his father, "Run, papa! They're coming to kill you!" Picolo shoots Paul dead. A paraffin invoice starts Ness looking for Paul; Ciamino and thugs are looking for Raineri and the books. Raineri, clutching the books, is running and hiding in the streets. Ness finds Paul's widow. Raineri thinks of the one place he can go-- to night school, where Mr. Lee is teaching them all how to be good citizens. Ciamino and Picolo spot Raineri; Picolo shoots at him, and Ness hears the gunfire. There's a shootout; Ness guns down Picolo, who takes a header from an outdoors staircase, 2 stories up. In a dramatic moment, Ness walks right up Ciamino; Ness, who keeps track of everything, right down to counting bullets, says, "They only hold 6." Ciamino tries to fire his gun. >click, click
