The Untouchables (1959): September 1932. The Federal Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, 430 miles west-southwest of Chicago, houses some of the nation's worst criminals. One of them is Nick Segal, who murdered 6 people, but only got convicted for violation of the Volstead Act; he got sentenced to 3 years, and is eligible for parole now after serving only one year. While unloading a truck, inmate Gus Caserta "accidentally" drops a 100-pound bag of potatoes on Nick, almost killing him; skinny inmate Phil Thorne sees the whole thing, he is there when it happens. Nick only gets a broken left arm, though. Later he gets worse news: parole denied. Ness gets called to meet with a small-time hood who runs part of the prison grapevine: Ed "Peanuts" Kieffer. (who is always eating peanuts, and cheats the peanut vending machines by sticking in a penny attached to a wire, then he retrieves the penny.) Kieffer tells Ness that Nick Segal wants to talk to him; but Ness says he doesn't want to talk to Segal-- who has a partner, and they run a $1-million per month gambling and speakeasy racket. The racket is still being run by the partner, while Segal rots in prison. At the Montmartre club, Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti presides over an emergency meet requested by Nat Baldwin (Segal's business partner). The other lieutenants at the meet are: Frank Gambol, Joe Balta, Ames Spitzel, and Louis Gallardo. Baldwin says Segal wanted to talk to Ness. Nitti: "He's your partner, he's your problem. Not ours." Baldwin says Segal talks about him. Nitti: "What is this? You want us to take care of him, so you don't have to split the take when he gets out, huh?" Nitti also points out that Baldwin was supposed to fix the parole board, and didn't. Baldwin says that Segal might sing to Ness. Nitti says, "Okay, but this is the last time we bail you out." The meet is over. (so is Segal's life.) But Ness does want to meet with Segal; Ness goes to Leavenworth (which holds 3,000 prisoners) and talks to Warden G. N. Rinehardt. Segal is working in the prison library; just then, a rifle shot blasts through the window, killing Segal. When Ness investigates, it seems the rifle was fired from the roof of the taller building next door. The warden says they only know one thing: there are Three Thousand Suspects. 2 days later, Ness is back in Chicago and he has a plan: he will transfer a convict, Tom Sebring, from another prison to Leavenworth, and get the inside info. Sebring will get a parole-- 6 years off his sentence-- if he comes through. Sebring shakes down a number of convicts. Finally, Gus Caserta sends a message out on the pipeline; it's a piece of paper, stuck with some chewing gum to an outgoing truck. Cam Allison follows the truck all the way to Monroe City, Missouri which is 194 miles away; the note has now been put inside an envelope and put into a mailbox. Later, Cam shows his Federal I.D. to a postman and gets the letter; after writing down the address, Cam lets the letter be delivered. It's addressed to Sam Argus who runs a pool hall. Next day, Ness goes there, nobody in Missouri recognizes him. The guy who shows up to get the letter from Argus is Ed Kieffer; when he sees Eliot, he says, "Mr. NESS." Everybody in the pool hall looks at them; half a dozen hoods put down their cue sticks and rush out the door. (funny scene) When Ness demands to know where Kieffer reroutes the letter, Kieffer gives him a phony address (a vacant lot). Ness makes a wrong decision and goes after the letter instead of arresting Kieffer. Later, Kieffer phones Nat Baldwin. In Leavenworth, Phil tells Sebring that Caserta is the guy he wants. At the Montmartre club, Nitti's plenty sore. Now Nat Baldwin wants him to take care of Sebring, too. This wouldn't have happened if Nat had kept his promise and gotten his partner paroled. Nitti sneers at Nat, "And you, double-crossin' your stinkin' partner, could louse up the whole operation." Nat claims he tried with the parole board, but they crossed him up. Nitti sneers, "I believe you like I believe a COP!" (Nitti says "cop" like it's a dirty word.) Nitti says he'll take care of it. And Nitti promises: "And, Nat, if anything goes wrong with this deal-- we're gonna throw YOU to the cops." Ness and the police comb the city for a week looking for Kieffer; ironically, Kieffer gets arrested by 2 detectives from the Peanut Vending Association-- they have been looking for him for 6 months. (that's hilarious) They turn Kieffer over to Ness. Kieffer is too scared to talk, but then Ness really scares him, saying, "Every raid, every arrest we make in the next month we'll credit to you." Kieffer tells him one of the guards has been bought. That explains how the rifle got into prison; Ness takes a train to Leavenworth. Now Nitti's plan goes into effect: Caserta, Grodin, and Drum (Sebring's cell mate) are going to pull a "jail break" that night. They think they've fooled Sebring into going along with it (they don't know Ness is getting him a parole, and Sebring is trapping them). Ness and the warden figure out the bribed guard is Regan. Grodin runs across the dark prison yard, then Drum. Guard Regan, with a rifle on top of the wall, does not fire. Caserta tells Sebring, "you're next." Sebring figures they bribed the guard to shoot the 3rd guy out, so Sebring pushes Caserta out. Guard Regan shoots Caserta. Just then, on top of the wall, Ness and the warden confront Regan. Regan fires at the warden, winging him; Ness shoot Regan, who takes a header off the 40-foot wall. The plan to kill Sebring failed; Ness later gets him paroled. In Chicago, a speeding car dumps the body of Nat Baldwin in front of the 43rd District Police Station. Nitti had kept his word. (synopsis by: kdh)
